Huichol Art - Skull lined with beads
Wood carvings decorated with beading or yarn applications are widely recognized. It is precisely in a community deeply rooted in its traditions that one of the most magical and representative artistic expressions of the country originates: Huichol art (wixarika). This magical and cosmic atmosphere has been preserved over time. Nowadays, each craftsman integrates to each of his pieces a reflection of his daily life elaborated with different materials like the beadwork where the colors and the forms are of a singular beauty. Living in small scattered settlements high in the Sierra Madre Mountains of central-west Mexico is an indigenous tribe of very unique and magical people – the Huichol Indians. They remain one of the last tribes of people in North America who still live much as they did in pre-Colombian times, maintaining the same ageless rituals and beliefs.
